OUR STORY FROM THE FOUNDERS
MORNE & NICOLE
Dear Journer,
We are Morne and Nicole Van Staden, owners of Journey Coffee Co. When we moved to Vacaville, we only knew one thing…we were meant to be in Vacaville. We DID NOT know we were here to start a coffee shop. As life tends to go, we had our plan, but there was another plan. After losing our job within 3 months of moving here, we had to go back to the drawing board. Two things kept coming up: people & coffee. In the summer of 2013, a friend approached us about starting a coffee truck and on Black Friday of 2013, we launched The Truck in the Vacaville Premium Outlets. Over that year, The Truck continued to operate in the outlets, while visiting local businesses, such as banks and hospitals. There was such a desire for specialty coffee in the Vacaville area that we decided to open a brick & mortar in the Alamo Plaza, along with welcoming our first son, Luke. In 2015, Journey took over the building space next door and expanded the menu to offer smoothies, cold-pressed juices, and more healthy food options. This expansion also included the birth of our second son, Joshua. 2017 was the beginning of our roasting program where after learning from one of the leading industry experts, Scott Rao, our roasting team hit the ground running with a 5lb San Franciscan Roaster. Today, our roasting program has expanded to a 20kg Mill City Roaster. Our coffee is not only enjoyed in Vacaville and Fairfield, but we import coffee into many great American cities across the country from San Francisco to Boston. Our roasting team will always hold the highest standard for ethically sourced, fair trade and specialty grade coffee. In early 2018, a Second Location was launched in Fairfield, CA, shortly after the birth of our third son, Eli. In September of 2019, the Fairfield Location completely opened up with much larger roasting and baking facilities and more seating. Our Third Location at One Lake opened up in October of 2020, we also had our fourth son, Caleb, only months prior. We were fortunate enough to open our Fourth Location in the heart of Downtown Vacaville, revitalizing the old performing arts theatre with our vision and mission in mind. Journey Downtown deviates from the traditional coffee shop experience in many exciting ways, featuring an overhauled food menu catered to a friendly sit down environment, as well as a fully functional theatre where we host a plethora of community events. As the business grows, there are more opportunities for employment, more seats for people in the community, and more space to display goods from local vendors.
